One of his biographers called him "a complex man a born leader, a brilliant soldier, a devoted husband, a proud father; intelligent, instinctive, brave, compassionate, vain, egotistical, and arrogant." As that description suggests, every account of Erwin Rommel's life must address what appears to be its inherent contradictions. Fittingly, and in the same vein, he remains one of the best remembered generals of World War II and history at large, despite the fact he was on the losing side, and he was defeated at the most famous battle of his career, the decisive Battle of El Alamein.
Nonetheless, the Desert Fox has been a legend on both sides of the Atlantic for over 70 years, thanks to the crucial role he played in history's deadliest conflict. Before his legendary encounters against the British and Americans in North Africa, Rommel gained much fame for his role in the invasions of Poland and France before was sent to North Africa in February 1941. In describing Rommel, the Italian officer Alessandro Predieri talked about his "two very rare and precious gifts". "The first is luck, which you will remember, Napoleon prescribed to his generals...the second gift is that of being able to keep his bearings in the midst of all the confusion of modern desert warfare. His instinct tells him immediately where a difficult situation is going to develop, and off he goes with his Kampfstaffel [Headquarters Group], which he treats like a Praetorian Guard, and puts things right, charging around like a junior officer."
With the Axis forces trying to push through Egypt towards the Suez Canal and the British Mandate of Palestine, American forces landed to their west in North Africa, which ultimately compelled Rommel to try to break through before the Allies could build up and overwhelm them with superior numbers. The Second Battle of El Alamein was a turning point in the two-year conflict between Allied forces and a combined German-Italian force in North Africa. While the scale of the battle paled in comparison to the battles of the Eastern Front, where the majority of German troops were concentrated, it still marked an important victory in World War II, especially from the British perspective.
After leaving North Africa, Rommel spent much of the later part of the war strengthening German defenses across the Atlantic in anticipation of an amphibious Allied landing, which would come in June 1944. But the murky role he played in the notorious July 20 plot on Adolf Hitler's life in 1944, the closest an assassination attempt got to killing the Nazi Führer, would bring about the Desert Fox's untimely demise in October 1944, even as the Soviets and Western Allies were tightening the vise on Germany. Compelled to take cyanide by authorities, the Desert Fox insisted he was innocent until his dying day, and his popularity forced the Nazi government to claim his death was brought about by a heart attack or a cerebral embolism. In fact, Rommel was given an official state funeral, and Winston Churchill would go on to praise him, "He also deserves our respect because, although a loyal German soldier, he came to hate Hitler and all his works, and took part in the conspiracy to rescue Germany by displacing the maniac and tyrant. For this, he paid the forfeit of his life."
Erwin Rommel The Life and Career of the Desert Fox (Audible Audio Edition) Charles River Editors Colin Fluxman Books
This book portrays Erwin Rommel, the famous Desert Fox. The author seeks to wrestle with the legend, the myth and the reality of this controversial WWII German general. The book describes Rommel's early years and his role in the invasions of Poland and France before was sent to North Africa in February 1941. His North African campaigns are briefly described; the author focuses on the famous battle of El Alamein which resulted in an important British victory. Rommel's part in the Normandy invasion is glossed over very briefly. The book includes good pictures and excellent battle maps (of El Alamein only). The majority of the book deals with the extant of Rommel's Nazi sympathies and his involvement, if any, in the July 20 attempt to kill Hitler. A significant portion of the book describes the plot itself along with the plans, execution, failure and aftermath. Although interesting, I felt that this much detail was extraneous and distracting. The author presents the various aspects of this complex man with scrupulous balance and objectivity which allows the reader to evaluate the different positions and themes and formulate an opinion.
However, while I fully recognize the space limitations of the Charles River series, I was disappointed with certain omissions that I felt would have provided the reader with important context and perspective. For example, the was no mention of Rommel's victory at Kasserine Pass, no discussion of his role in defending Normandy, his growing disillusion with the war, and, most significantly, why a Rommel legend and myth was created in the first place. What differentiated him from other German generals? Why was he praised, in public, by Winston Churchill? What made Rommel special? I didn't get a sense of this key element of the story in this book.

Erwin Rommel The Life and Career of the Desert Fox (Audible Audio Edition) Charles River Editors Colin Fluxman Books Reviews
I thought it was a very informative book,
A brief but seemingly accurate view of Rommel's life.
excellent book. nice research into Rommels life.
More a pamphlet than a book.
A pamphlet that briefly talks about Rommel then goes off in elaborate points about events that take place around him. Also to point out it seems that the writing makes a point to make him look very ignorant. Chapters also seem to cut end of events leaving confusion to how things unfold to bring you into the next chapter.
Erwin Rommel, aka. the Desert Fox,was the most famous of all World War II German Generals. This book tells the
the story of his life, how he served the 3rd Reich in Poland, North Africa, and Northwestern Europe. The book also debates
whether or not he participated in the July 20,1944 plot to kill Hitler. If you wish to know these things, buy this book. It
held my interest. If you are interested in Germany's conduct of the war, this is a good book to read.
This book examines the life of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, "the Desert Fox".. The author notes that any book about Rommel must address his apparant inherent contradictions. One biographer called him “a complex man a born lea brilliant soldier, a devoted husband, a proud father; intelligent, instinctive, brave, compassionate, vain, egotistical, and arrogant.” After the passing of 70+ years he remains one of the best remembered generals of World War II and of history at large, despite the fact he was on the losing side, and was defeated at the most famous battle of his career, the decisive Battle of El Alamein. Nonetheless, the Desert Fox has become a legend on both sides of the Atlantic, because of the crucial role he played in history’s deadliest conflict. The author notes that Rommel's life is by far the subject of more histories and biographies thany any other World War Two figure's. During thd past ten-fifteen year many Modern historians have expressed skepicism regarding his abilities as a General and harshly questioned his moral fiber for his choices regarding service to Nazism. Some have dedecated themselves to exposing what they call the "Rommel Myth" Accordingly the author of this extraordinary book strives to tell the story of Erwin Rommel from his birth to his death using both the positive and negative primary and secondary source materials to tell the Rommel story based on a preponderence of evidence. The results of his effort is a remarkable narrative that describes an an extremly intelegent and exceptional military leader, whose bravery and ability to maintain presence of mind while under fire were unquestioned. His character, while sometimes flawed, was always driven by duty, mission accomplishment, honor, love of country, self control, and command resposibilites for the wellfare of his subordinates.
This book was profesionally researched from a large number of primary and secondary sources, written, and published by Charles Rivers Editors. This publishing house has produced an extensive collection of throughly researched, concise, informative, and exceptionally well written historical texts that chronical the lives of important historical persons, key events, important cultures, nations, and peoples. Their purpose is to encourage reading and knowledge of history. I have read a number of their offerings and found each volumn extremly well written, throughly researched, and presented with an unbiased perspective. That is particularly the case with this srudy of Rommel as the author seeks to present a fair and honest portrait of the man.
To summerize the key findings of this book, Erwin Rommel served as a German military officer from age 22 in 1913 to his death at age 53 in October 1944. His death came by the hands of those he served so well, when he agreed to take poison in lieu of a trial (to ensure the wellfare of his family), because of his alleged involvement (never proven) in the famous July 20 Plot, to kill Hitler in 1944. During 10 of his 31 year military career, was spent commanding men in combat, first as a Lieutenant commanding a120 company in World War One and culmanating as a Field Marshal commanding the more than 70,000 men of the Afrika Korps during World War Two. His military record speaks for itself. He was a bold, decisive, offensively minded commander, straegist, tactician, leader, who achieved victories in every engagement he fought save one. His record of battlefield achievments are eztraordinary and unequalled by any 20th Century command. It is understandable that many who find themselves intrigued by Rommel’s military achievments and reputation as a man of honor, seek to know just how closely Rommel aligned himself with Nazi values. Was he simply ignorant of Nazi rhetoric? Was he completely apolitical believing that military officers should not involve themselves in politics? Was he naive or just preoccupied with his command functions? He was pragmatic but his sense of honor and duty drove him to insist on telling Hitler the truth, as the military situation for Germany devolved in late 1943 and 1944. Because he told the truth, Hitler labeled him a pesimist and stopped granting him access. While there is a great division when it comes to historical opinion with respect to Rommel’s merits as a general as well as the moral choices he made, both historians and the public continue to be intrigued by this man who died over 70 years ago. For myself the evidence presented in this remarkable book makes clear that Rommel lived his life in accord Erwin Rommel (1891-1945)
