I really felt horrible for the two women in Rays life. Happy that Anna got away from him, and happy that Jenny confided in her. But everything turned crazy from secrets that were kept. I loved this book, and couldn't put it down. I read it in one day because I needed to know what was going to happen. It will stick with me for awhile.Product details

I gave this mediocre thriller three stars because it was a fast read and somewhat suspensful which is good because I was somewhat entertained for part of the book, or at least hopeful! But I was disappointed with the last quarter of the book. It was like the author just couldn't come with a more imaginative or thrilling ending. It was so lame and something that a 6th grader might come up with. However, this mature author has great potential. Please don't give up. I say to the author you could rewrite this and create a much better and more satisfying end.
This was a really well written book about two women in the same family who are "wronged" by one of the men in the family. One of the women decides to take revenge and it affects everyone. The story almost lost me when Jenny reveals how she wants to get back at Ray. Don't want to give it away, but what she decided to do really wasn't logical, as her actions also involved people who were not part of what happened to her. It was so preposterous I almost stopped reading, but I was invested in the main character of Anna and so I sucked it up and went with it. There are a lot of twists and turns that keep the drama going until the end of the book. Although all characters didn't have the happy ending I would have liked, kudos to the author for giving the ending a twist that still satisfies.
There is no killer twist as promised, but the book falls down for so many other reasons. What a mess.
-The main character is apparently an idiot. Maybe ignorance is bliss?
- She is unaffected by her previous abusive marriage. Totally unrealistic of a long-term domestic abuse victim.
- The relationships between characters are stilted and unnatural.
- Characters' motivations were unclear or non-existent.
- The pacing of the book is all over the place.
- SO MANY ERRORS! Who edited this?
- The writing itself is just bad. Cliches, phrases repeated again & again, cheesy sentences and cheesier characters.
I could go on, but I'll spare you. Just don't waste your time reading this junk.
Like other readers I simply cannot understand how this book got 4 and 5 star reviews. I thought the beginning was OK but I am suprised at the number that thought Annie a heroin when in fact I thought she was pretty disgusting.

She worked with her Husband in a business (as do I) and had her own wage which she tucked away in her own bank account. She left him but also drew cash from his account and spent it on trivia for fun. However, she was terrified of him, had been a subject to physical abuse ending up in hospital and yet her adult children didn't tell her that they knew. It was never discussed. They didn't address their father, this is quite ridiculous. She walks out on him and then starts a clandestine affair with another man lies to her children etc etc The last few chapters I skipped through as simply couldn't be bothered to read it line by line.. The ending was even more absurd, although I must say that it isn't an ending we will be presented with a follow up for sure. The actions of characters in this book are quite unbelievable, as is the story line.
Anita Waller has woven a story that follows one family with many secrets....deadly secrets. The Carbrook children have always known & concealed their father's abuse of their mother. And they are all adults now so why continue this lifetime of torment? Anna has planned a new life, leaving Ray to deal with the aftermath of his abuse. Torn by fear and indecision, Anna slowly begins to break out of her shell and pursues a normal life with new friends and a renewed hope for the future. And just when the door of indecision closes, her world is shattered by an unimaginable secret involving Ray and their daughter-in-law, Jenny. The twisted fate that ultimately leads to Anna's involvement in a macabre plot, unravels with a vengeance and life for the Carbrook family is never the same.
Great plot with characters that could have been expanded more as the story evolved but overall, an enjoyable read.
Let me preface by saying I really enjoyed this book! The writing style was great, I was sucked in immediately and devoured this book. I have to give it a low rating based on the ending. I don't want to give anything away but the ending really upset me. It was almost like the author put in great effort with the storyline up until the end where she just stop caring? left on vacation and had someone else step in and end it? I am not sure what happened but it was bad!
Quite an engrossing story, a very fast read. Hooked me in right away and kept me til the end. It's been some time since I've read such a captivating story and this one is that and more. This story was original and gripping. Highly recommend!
